The Arrival: A Breath of Fresh Sea Air

From the moment I stepped foot in Seaview Villa, I was enveloped by a sense of peace. The house stands proud on the cliffs, a significant part of the vista of Lynmouth Harbour. Being able to see and hear the sea from our home, has always been a dream of ours, and so we decided to leave London behind and embrace the opportunity to purchase Seaview Villa.

To hear waves crashing against the rocks gives me an immediate feeling of calm. Warm greetings from the local community has enabled us a family to embrace living in such a remote location. The atmosphere of the village is far from isolated - a thriving hub of rural rebels, ranging from landowners to seafarers, and everything in between, all connected in their love and respect for the sea, nature and the wilds of Exmoor.

David and I chose a property that exudes elegance and charm, and we have worked tirelessly to ensure it is not without modern comforts. Expansive windows effortlessly showcase the breathtaking ocean views, guaranteeing that inspiration for our decor choices are always within reach. The rooms are cozy, stylish and characterful, and we have ensured that the colour palette is warm and reflective of the period of the house, which dates from 1721. We have a log burner at the heart of the house, and are delighted that through our efforts, the property has now become a haven of creativity that helps fuels artistic spirit.

Magic of Coastal Art Retreats, Devon:

Each day at Seaview Villa brought a new perspective on fresh opportunities. From restoring the house, to inviting guests to stay with us through our listing on Air Bnb, David and I started to enjoy the prospect of sharing the home that we have created with like-minded travellers. With unparallelled landscapes surrounding us in the Lyn Valley and beyond into Exmoor, we enjoy hosting intrepid travelers set to discover the delights of the South West Costal Path, and the secrets of Exmoor.

There is no denying that this area has always attracted artists - writers, artists and photographers are often passing through for inspiration. It felt like a natural progression for us to launch Lone Pine Retreats and to begin our exciting journey hosting art & wellness retreats in Lynmouth.

Amy Jobes was the first artist that we worked with, and we were all blown away by the each and every painting that the participants came away with. The atmosphere was so supportive, peaceful and light hearted with everyone enjoying the experience as a whole - the journey into nature, the wonderful light and spacious art studio nestled into the Valley of Rocks, the unparallelled teaching, and the fantastic catering provided by our talented catering team.

Embracing Wellness: Restorative Retreat Activities

The concept most definitely incorporates wellness, which plays a vital role at Lone Pine Retreats. We ensure that every day participants enjoy activities designed to nourish their bodies and minds. Wild swimming, hot saunas and ice baths with the surf as our soundtrack, are an excellent way to start the day. These were particularly appreciated by participants of our first wellness retreat with Alexandra Evans, last May, and now with permanent sauna and ice bath in Lynmouth, we are extremely lucky to be able to include these treatments in each and every retreat we host.

Swimming in such stunning surroundings brings a sense of liberation that is hard to describe, and the cold water triggers a nervous system response that results in an immense feeling of deep relaxation. These activities help participants reconnect with nature and their artistic inspiration.

All are optional, but for those that do participate, there is an undeniable benefit to the way they then approach the process of creating their pieces.

Culinary Journeys: Exploring Local Cuisine

Food is a significant part of any retreat experience. At Seaview Villa, meals are crafted from locally-sourced ingredients, turning each dining occasion into an artistic journey. We gather around the table filled with vibrant dishes, inspired by the local landscape.

We enjoy freshly caught fish, seasonal vegetables, and a variety of unique flavors, conversations about our art practices flow freely. I realized early on that the experience of sharing a meal can enhance creativity and connection among participants.

Building Connections: A Community of Creatives

The spirit of community among participants has been one of the highlights of our experience in running these retreats. Artists from diverse backgrounds come together, united by a shared passion for creativity and personal growth.

Throughout the long weekend, we exchanged ideas, provided constructive feedback, and celebrated each other's artistic journeys. I strongly feel that the friendships formed in this nurturing environment make the artistic experiences even more meaningful. Participants of our art retreats leave us with a network of like-minded friends, which we hope are cherished and nurtured.

The Natural Landscape: Inspiration Awaits

The stunning landscapes of Devon provided endless inspiration. Each day, art retreat participants wander along the coastal paths with their sketchbooks, capturing the beauty of the dramatic cliffs and serene beaches.

Participants of our art retreats have been lucky enough to witness sunrise, sunset and even the much coveted northern lights! These moments reminded us of how art can convey the beauty of the world around us.

Leaving with More Than Just Art

Often, as our art retreats draw to a close, I realised that participants leave with far more than just completed artworks. The retreat offers them clarity, and a revitalized passion for their artistic journey, whether they are amateur or professional artists.

They develop a deeper appreciation for art and nature's connection, which often influences future projects. With all our hearts filled with gratitude, and minds buzzing with new ideas, saying goodbye to everyone is always sad.
